August 2025, I was in a pretty dark place…
I was still coming to terms emotionally with my young daughter moving 140 kilometres away. At the same time, I was carrying the guilt and heartbreak of seeing my fiercely independent mother admitted into care in circumstances I felt were insensitive at best.
And while my inner circle (y'all know who you are God bless you ❤) were there for me in so many ways, work-wise I was in a funk and didn't really know what to do.
After 30+ years as a marketer I knew I wanted to remain in marketing…
But I was also pretty certain for a number of reasons, that my days providing done-for-you marketing services to clients were in the past.
Like I said, I didn't really know what to do…
Then one day I came across micro1.
They were adding to their talent pool and as I had absolutely nothing to lose I took an interview with a personable chatbot named Zara.
The rest as they say is history because one certification, 500+ hours and nearly $50k in earnings later, here I am, still expert training with micro1, but also on a mission to share this human data industry with the world.
Plenty of companies talk about valuing the people who work with them. Until now, however, I had never encountered a platform offering remote freelancers practical support such as wellbeing programmes and emergency hardship grants.

Human 1st commitments — a baseline set of guarantees including pay transparency, twice-monthly payment, written project scope before you start, the right to decline work without penalty, reachable leadership, a right to appeal decisions, and an expert happiness index that directly affects how project leads are evaluated.
Rest credits — quarterly cash bonuses (on top of regular pay) for experts who stay active, paid automatically with nothing to apply for.
Confidential reporting hotline — an independent, fully anonymous line for raising concerns, available in 113 languages and encrypted, open to every expert from their first offer.
Expert wellbeing support — at 100+ hours, access to a mental-health and wellbeing program (more on that below).
Emergency grants — for life events a paycheck can't cover (medical bills, family emergencies, natural disasters), with grants of up to $5,000.

STEM Expert
Role: Solve, review and validate challenging scientific and technical problems used to train and evaluate frontier AI models. Work may include scientific reasoning, data analysis, Python, simulations and checking AI-generated solutions for accuracy.
Pay: $80–$150/hour advertised rate. Compensation is output-based, with experts paid for completed tasks that meet project specifications.
Requirements: Deep expertise in at least one relevant STEM discipline, including chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, earth science/geoscience/environmental science or robotics, together with practical Python skills. micro1 specifically notes that this is a coding-heavy role and candidates should have experience using coding agents with Python.
Location / countries: Global — fully remote. The listing does not specify a restricted list of countries or regions, so I would describe it simply as open globally rather than naming individual countries.
Time commitment: Approximately 15 hours per week, with flexible scheduling. You choose the hours and days you work, including weekends if preferred.
Start: micro1 says it typically fills roles within 48 hours and expects selected experts to begin their first task within 24–48 hours of onboarding.
Career Coach
Role: Take part in realistic one-to-one career coaching conversations designed to help train next-generation AI systems. Scenarios may include career planning, job searches, interviews, professional development, workplace challenges and career transitions.
Pay: $50–$100/hour advertised rate.
Requirements: Professional experience as a Career Coach, Career Counselor, Career Advisor, Professional Coach or similar. Strong communication, active listening and interpersonal skills are important, with several years of hands-on coaching, mentoring or professional-development experience preferred.
Location / countries: United States only. This is a fully remote role, but the listing specifically restricts applicants to the USA.
AI experience: Not required. micro1 states that your existing career-coaching expertise is what matters.
Working style: Remote contractor work involving paired conversation sessions with other professionals, following project guidelines to keep the interactions natural, useful and representative of real career coaching.
AI Facial Data Collection Contributor
Role: Get paid to contribute to an AI training project by providing 30 clear, unedited selfies and 10 short videos of yourself from across the past five years.
Who it's for: This is one of the broadest opportunities in the issue. You do not need a specialist professional background — you mainly need suitable photos/videos, attention to detail and the ability to follow submission instructions.
Family & friends: micro1 specifically welcomes siblings and twins — identical or fraternal — to apply as well. If you know someone suitable, this is an easy opportunity to share.
Pay: One-time payment after the required selfies and videos have been submitted. The listing does not state the payment amount.
Location / countries: Remote. The listing does not specify individual eligible countries or regions, so I would not describe it as global unless micro1 confirms that separately.
Requirements: Clear selfies and videos taken with a smartphone or camera; ability to remove filters or edits where required; careful attention to instructions; and willingness to report any issues with submissions.
What makes it different: Unlike many micro1 projects that require professional or technical expertise, this one has a very low barrier to entry and could potentially suit a much wider range of people.

How long have you been a Human Data Expert: I got my first paid project with micro1 in August 2025, but have been training AI since December 2024. My book The Intellectual Side Hustle documents my journey and experiences over an 18 month period.
What you like about working with micro1: I was fortunate enough to 'get in early' as the saying goes, and as a result, I have been able to establish myself not only as a subject-matter expert, but also being called on for generalist projects.
While micro1 has provided me with genuinely interesting projects that pay well, it's the 'people' side of the business that I am most grateful for.
They respect the time, effort and energy that goes into this work. The team leaders that manage projects are always helpful, understanding and in my case very patient!
There's a real sense of community, underlined by a fantastic night out we had in London towards the back end of 2025.

Recent initiatives like the Expert Support Program underline micro1's commitment to its human data experts.
What could be better: As someone who has earned close to $50,000 over 13 months with micro1, I don't really have anything to complain about!
But I think the next stage for micro1 is to bring experts in as core staff.
My own work with them has been varied so why not offer those who have put in the hard yards, full-time roles not only to deepen the loyalty and consistency clients ultimately pay for, but to also give micro1 a proven, trusted pool of people who can flex to wherever the work is, without having to start cold each time.
Secondly, given micro1's fantastic learning culture, I think there is huge scope to further develop experts within their actual specialism which would see them for example building agents and workflows under the micro1 banner.
From an expert standpoint, it minimises the prospect of having years of expertise potentially watered down while becoming a commoditised generalist.
For micro1 it means a bigger 'product suite' to offer frontier labs and enterprise clients alike.
Additional thoughts:
One practical recommendation for anyone interested in micro1 is to become familiar with the resources they already share. Their YouTube channel includes webinars that offer useful insight into current projects, the expertise they are looking for and where the platform is heading.
There is also micro1 training available through Udemy. Even if the right opportunity has not appeared yet, these resources can help you understand the environment and prepare for when it does.
Selection is an opportunity and not a verdict…
Here I am as a boy playing tennis.
I was fortunate to attend Troy University in Alabama on a tennis scholarship, studying marketing and journalism, but only after I had missed out on being selected for a touring team in the UK.
The final choice came down to myself and one other lad, but before making his final decision the coach said to me:
"Mucha, if we pick you, it doesn't mean you're going to make it. And if we don't pick you, it doesn't mean you can't make it."
I wasn't picked but his words stayed with me, and I’d like to encourage others with this very same principle.
Being accepted by micro1 does not guarantee that you will build a successful career in human data, and equally, being unsuccessful in countless interviews and applications does not mean you do not belong in the industry.
For every expert who secures sustained work with micro1, many capable people will not. Sometimes because of timing, project demand or fit as opposed to ability.
If you want to establish yourself with micro1 or anywhere else in this fast-moving industry, your level of resilience is really going to matter.
Learn from the available resources, apply for opportunities that genuinely match your expertise, improve how you present that expertise, keep going and explore other platforms too.
As I learned all those years ago, selection is an opportunity, not a verdict.

Closing thoughts
This edition has been personal because my experience with micro1 has been personal.
Over the past 13 months, the platform has given me more than projects and income. It has given me renewed professional direction, a community, and a closer view of an industry being built in real time.
That does not mean the work is predictable.
Human data projects can move quickly, pause unexpectedly, and above all else, they demand flexibility, and anyone entering this field should understand that reality.
But platforms can still choose how they treat people while navigating it.
micro1's Expert Support Program, access to Unmind, and the opportunities featured in this edition point towards a more human model where Human Data Experts are treated as contributors to the AI economy, rather than interchangeable inputs.
After more than 500 hours with micro1, that's the part of the story I wanted to share.
